^ I want. Still haven't decided yet on what 1911 I'm gonna get but I'm definitely leaning towards the Les Baer...

dealer.americantactical.us/products?product=1405$400. American model tuned by Germans made in some 3rd world country. I can imagine the distaste with which ze Germans designed a .45 caliber slug-thrower. Cheap but effective gun. Best thing you can get for under $600. Nothing but good reviews. I also happen to like 1911's. Stupid Sin City. EDIT: Oh, and whatever you do, don't by Taurus.

I don't know anything about guns, but using them for the first time at my friends bachelor party was surprisingly way more fun than I expected
I don't actually have anything to contribute though

I haven't heard too many bad things about Taurus, though then again I haven't heard much at all about them haha. Scott, what kind of handguns are you looking at? Any specific caliber? What kind of price range are you thinking?

On a teaching assistant's salary + my wife's wages while finishing college... 400-600, optimally. Caliber is anything that will make an intruder second-guess himself, and we'll need something she can handle (she isn't weak, but still).

Well for home defense, ease of use, and on a budget, I would recommend a Remington 870 12-GA shotgun over a handgun, but that's just me. They're much easier to wield, you don't have to be as accurate, you can get ammunition that will drop most any intruder but without the fear of it going through walls and killing your neighbors, and the sound alone of chambering a round is enough to deter most anyone. They go on sale for ~$330 and are super reliable. I have had one for some years now and I absolutely love it.
BUT, if you're set on handguns... I'd look into the Springfield XDs or Smith and Wesson M&Ps. They're polymer-based semi-auto handguns that come in a range of calibers. They're comparable to the Glocks but in my opinion are a bit smoother/easier to use (the Glocks are clunky and just kinda meh I think). I have friends with both and they swear by them. I've shot them and really like them too. Sorry Azrael, but I wouldn't suggest getting an off-brand 1911 such as that, at least for personal defense purposes because they tend to be unreliable (I have another friend with one that has had a number of problems).
Once you narrow down some options, I'd suggest going to a range and renting a few and really feel what you like. Different guns may feel better to different people, depending on your preferences.
Hope that helps!

Hadn't thought of going the shotgun route. I'll discuss that with Haley.

EDIT: Oh, and whatever you do, don't by Taurus. I'm actually planning on buying a pistol soon; why do you say this? Taurus has a reputation among my gun-nut friends as being about as reliable as a weatherman. Some of this is undoubtedly gun snobbery, but all rumors have a basis and my friends said when they fired them they got a lot of FTFs (failure to fire) and a couple mis-feeds. Some guns do this, but after the 50th round, hopefully not. On a teaching assistant's salary + my wife's wages while finishing college... 400-600, optimally. Caliber is anything that will make an intruder second-guess himself, and we'll need something she can handle (she isn't weak, but still). I like 1911's. See below. .45 round with a lot of stopping power, but it's a heavy gun so the kick is manageable. Hope that helps! Yes. Kerrick is 100% correct. A shotgun is your best bet when defending your home. May I suggest Herr Mossberg www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/item/61263_Mossberg_Rifles_Shotguns_MOSS_50521_500SP_12_18_6SH_CB_PGK_PRK.aspxNot bad for $250. As for 1911 clones, my feelings on that are complicated. Yes, 1911 clones can be VERY bad (Hence my dislike of Taurus), but there are reliable models on the market. www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9GFFryTD7EThis guy is one of my favorites on YouTube. He's using the gun I plan to get in this vid. I feel he does a good job debunking a lot of the myths about some of the 1911 clones. I have heard mostly good things about ATI. But yes, I recommend a shotgun for home defense. The guy recently put up a vid featuring a Mossberg, come to think of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_1-E6qFuXk

Wow, my country really has much stricter laws on gun ownership.
Also, you can't shoot intruders in your home over here, even if you actually own a gun.

When I was shopping for a shotgun some years back, I looked at those made by Remington, Mossberg, and Binelli. (For the "entry-level" price range I was looking at, those three seemed to be the best options.) Different folks prefer different brands for different reasons but they all make comparably priced shotguns and are of decent quality. Some folks swear by one brand, some another. But if you do decide to go down the shotgun route, I suggest just handling a few in stores and see what suits you the best. Personally, I thought the Remington 870 felt by far the sturdiest and most robust out of the above brands and had all of the features I was looking for so I went with it (and haven't regretted it for a second).
Do you plan to use it only for home defense or maybe some trap/skeet too? The one thing I regret with my shotgun is buying the 18" and not the 28" barrel version. The shotguns are the same price but to by a separate barrel, the 28" is way more expensive. For home defense, 18" is definitely the way to go, but if you want to use it for much more, I suggest buying it with the 28" and then buying a separate 18" that you can swap in/out (which is super easy to do).

I just got a new car and am moving into a new place so purchasing a new gun is on the back-burner for the time-being since my funds are a bit lower now. HOWEVER, the folks that I'm renting from have horses and lots of ground squirrels that like to dig holes for the horses to trip in... So I did purchase a 1200 fps pellet rifle to take out the little suckers (the squirrels, not the horses). They said they'd pay me $1/squirrel haha.
