Being happy is an excellent goal, but being obsessed with one's own happiness is not. Happiness is found in the things in life that take a person outside of oneself, but on the contrary, excessive self-gratification often leaves a person empty (i.e. the "ME, ME, ME!" sort of attitude one often sees in a child).
I think that's what dlectronic was getting at when he said, "I'd say maturity is when one finally understands that life is more than an endless quest so gratify one's self." Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats pretty much it right there. Granted, we are all by nature very selfish and I can attest to this.
Self respect is good IMO (haha), but oftentimes we take things too far-- ie. we worship ourselves in some senses.

Happiness is just something to keep people from going insane.
We define a child as being immature, but in reality the child is maturing all the time. At what point does a person reach complete maturity? I think self-awareness does have to be part of it, but there has to be something more.
I think I would define it as this: Maturity is what level of awareness and wisdom a person possesses.
Immaturity doesn't exist, it is just a word to describe being less mature.
I asked all this because there are way too many definitions of this word we use.

But are we called (Biblically) to serve ourselves, or Christ? I wasn't talking about serving at all. I was replying to your comment on worship and pleasure. As worship is/should-be pleasurable, and thus his creation should be enjoyed/admired.

Rev. 14:7: He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water." I was looking for an answer, not a quote from a book.

Would you like him to rephrase that opinion in his own words?
Obviously his awnser and the quote of the book are the same.

I was looking for an answer, not a quote from a book. I believe that we breathe and therefore are in the Lord's debt. I can do no less than present myself before God as a living sacrifice.
