If you were an atheist would you have a problem listening to BTA?

That depends on the strain of atheism to which I adhered. Were I simply a passive atheist, meaning just a person who does not believe in God, then I would listen to them without problem.
Were I, however, one of the angry "new atheists" berating religion as the primary evil in this world and making 'witty' quips about hair-dryers then yes I would have a problem listening to someone preach the gospel to me through music.
Even if I was not Sam Harris, I might have a problem. The dynamic has changed drastically over the past 10 years or so, but I remember going to 'mixed' concerts where people booed the Christian band in the lineup because it was composed of Christians...can you picture fans of Mayhem or Burzum "being okay with listening to Christian metal" and would they even aknowledge it as true metal? There has long been an anti-Christian and anti-religion atmosphere in parts of the metal scene.

Plus look at me, I am obviously a Burzum fan but I am on a forum for a Christian band, and I am a Christian.

But why do you feel attracted to Burzum?

But why do you feel attracted to Burzum? Because the music blows almost everything else away. I truly don't care about the lyrics, and most of Count's lyrics are not "satanic" anyway.

But what is it about the music that blows everything else away? The melodies, counterpoints, atmosphere.

You see, what I don't understand is, why would a Christian enjoy such an atmosphere?
Now, I haven't listened to a lot of Burzum, or BM in general for that matter, but what turns me off of it is the evil/occult atmosphere inherent to the genre.
But yeah, I suppose that isn't really an argument.
I by the way fully agree with the video of John Piper earlier in this thread and he probably explains that opinion better than I would.

Well, you like metal too and metal typically has a dark atmosphere. When I say atmosphere I mean from the music not the singing just to make sure things are clear. Listen to Necromanicide from Mortification and tell me that it has a happy atmosphere.

I've recently become rather wary of some of the Christian metal out there too, for that very reason. I just listened to the song you suggessted and that is a very good example of the Christian metal that I feel uncomfortable listening to. I guess I became a pussy. Becoming The Archetype has never sounded quite as dark and sinister to me as for instance that song does. Also there is a difference, to me at least, for music that sounds dark and between music that sounds sinister/occult/evil.

Also you could just read that whole book, it's great. Available in .pdf as well, so it costs nothing

I've been praying about this lately, and for the last week or so I've been listening to more Christian-oriented bands than I have in years, and that's felt really good.
So I just had a pretty big-time musical purge. And, even though I haven't been interested them in years, all of a sudden I'm really into Demon Hunter again. It's actually pretty cool.
So, in a way, my music taste has come full-circle.

Demon Hunter are alright. Even though they are not real metal they are the band that got me into it. Nowadays I don't listen to metalcore so they are hard to enjoy.

That happened to me as well when I stopped listening to certain things It was like the stuff I did listen to I enjoyed way more and I started listening to a few things I thought I "grew out of" Although now probably 80% of my music listening is of about 4 different musicians and I've never been happier with music.
