I recently got these as an early Christmas gift from a friend: "Rephormula" and "Pain Necessary to Know" by Ephel Duath "Then Comes Affliction to Awaken the Dreamer" by Twisted into Form
I haven't had a chance to listen to any of them all the way through except "Pain..." which is quite good. Very jazzy and extremely strange, but in a good way. -Kerrick

All of the above are awesome. I don't own any of them but I'll be purchasing them at some point in the next ... few years.....

Yeah, I finally got to listen to the other two all the way through and I like 'em all quite a bit. My favorite is "Rephormula" because of its pure insanity and density, plus I really enjoy black metal. "Pain Necessary to Know" is far from black metal but it's fun. And "Then Comes..." is good too. Kind of like a more guitar driven Spiral Architect with a little more melody. I'd definitely suggest getting all of them, especially the Ephel Duath. I'm planning on getting "Painter's Palette" by them some time soon hopefully, then I'll have their complete library. Good stuff. -Kerrick

I'm wondering what the original Phormula sounded like, but from what I understand it's out of print now.

Yeah, I've never seen it for sale. And actually, I really don't know if they changed any of the original 8 songs; I think they just added 5 more to Phormula, but I could be totally wrong. -Kerrick

Rephormula is remixes.

You sure? Here's my reasoning behind it: 1) If you look at the back of the cd case, it says "Rephormula" then the list of 8 songs that were on Phormula. Then it says "remixes" followed by two remixed songs, then it says "demo tape opera" and the three songs that came from that. It seems to me that if they were all remixes, then they'd say that, not just to tracks 9 and 10. 2) If you go to EphelDuath.net and go to the "albums" section, it gives recording info on all their albums. For Phormula, it says, "Recorded mixed and mastered at Fear Studio (Ravenna-Italy) by Gabry & Paso" and for Rephormula it says, "Tracks 1-8 recorded and mixed at Fear Studio (Ravenna-Italy) by Gabry & Paso Track 9 remixed by Homo Homini Loops at Pest-Room Studio Track 10 remixed by Paso at Fear Studio Tracks 11-13 from the demo tape Opera, recorded and mixed at Blue Train Studio by Antonio Morgante & Giorgio Spolaor" Since both were recorded and mixed by the same people and same place, it makes me think that they're the same mixes. Did I make any sense? I don't know, it made sense in my mind... -Kerrick

Yeah that makes sense. The way they were marketing it sounded like 'the brand new reworked version!' but i guess not.

I haven't seen anything official saying yes or no, so it's possible that it is a completely reworked version. If that's what the band said, then it's probably true. Unfortunately, it's been out for a while, so they don't really have any advertisements on their website or anything saying so anymore, and I haven't been aware of them long enough to have seen stuff when it was new. I'm going to try to find some reviews of it and maybe they'll say whether or not... It's a mystery! -Kerrick

Well, I found some reviews and they weren't very helpful. I guess it'll remain a mystery...

Don't matter to me, if it's pleasant to the ears then I'll enjoy it But you know.. if there's an uber-rare version of Phormula that is now out of print and megarare on eBay or whatever.. I don't really care all that much. If the band re-released it in a new version, I'll take it that they don't want me to hear their old stuff, and they probably have good reason for it. The same way mewithoutYou hasn't re-released their first EP. Last purchase: I Hate Sally - Don't Worry Lady Lengsel - The Kiss, the Hope (mailorder, not here yet) Next purchase: no idea, probably some more cassettes from the local used record shop

Ooh! Definitely share what you think of the new Lengsel album! I'm eager to hear it. I'm kind of hesitent though, as from the two songs I have heard, it's very different and will probably take some getting used to. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts. -Kerrick

Cool, thanks. Yeah, that cd's on my list of "to get" but I've been getting a bunch of music lately, I think I'll let what I have sink in a little more before I get anything else. -Kerrick
