We Ontario people need to do 40 hours of community service before graduating high school...
It's not a bad thing, it's not hard, and it makes you get involved in your community.

Like ecclesiastes said, we in Ontario already have this requirement. In my opinion, it's a great idea- it gets students involved in the community who otherwise wouldn't be, and many of us learn something along the way. I got my hours by spending three weeks volunteering at a summer camp, and as a result I have several qualifications as well as basic groundskeeping and housekeeping skills.
In addition, I hardly think this bill being a violation to an amendment is actually an argument against it. It should stand or fall on its own merits.

More importantly, could the required hours go toward National Honor Society requirements.

Eh, I think it's bs.
All you do is create a negative stigma around community service and teach kids that it's a chore. Those who want to help their communities will regardless of whether they are forced to, and you're only getting 40 (probably 40 very nonenthusiastic and nonhelpful) hours out of the others.

There's always private school or home school.

No, many of the others would just lie on the log instead of 40 nonethusiatic/helpful hours.
I don't think it would be that big a deal to get the hours, but it sort of defeats the whole volunteering being good thing that this is trying to promote.

Seriously? Come on. There is no way that this is a violation of the 13th amendment.
Required community service /= slavery. That's even stretchier than Stretch Armstrong.
I think it's a good thing.

I agree, I think it's a good thing. You're required to work anyway to graduate high school. If you aren't working and you graduate then we have a serious issue with our education system. Physical work on top of mental work is a good thing. You're going to have to work when you get out in the working world, may as well get off your butt and do something and get the hang of it first.

Well, I think it's a good thing that you get a good experience of actual work when doing work experience like that described. In the UK there is a non-compulsory work experience system, which pretty much every school does, and it's normally carried out for a week or two. In my whole time at that particular school, it's that experience which has most shaped me. Yes, there were those that didn't really do anything about it, but they were punished by having to do lots of menial jobs around school.

Also, should the compulsory national service in many countries such as Switzerland be made illegal then?
