^^^^^^mandatory enlistment in armed forces
This is not a violation of anything. I can see no problems with this being passed.

Well, mandatory enlistment would be called a draft over here and that is unlawful

Wow. You're really that stubborn about this, aren't you?
Required community service DOES NOT EQUAL SLAVERY.
You are not REQUIRED to graduate high school. As a matter of fact, you're perfectly capable of dropping out of high school and getting a GED, which is exactly the same as a diploma. There are OTHER OPTIONS.
This is just a requirement, exactly the same as taking a science class or an English class. What's next, are you going to call required reading compulsory servitude?
I'll say it again - THIS IS IN NO WAY A VIOLATION OF THE 13TH AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Required community service and slavery are two completely different things.

My point is that you have to do something your being forced to do and its totally a waste of time.
Its probably not as bad as the 3 months of military service Obama is going to enforce.

In the state of Arizona, you are required to have 4 years of math classes, 4 years of English classes, 4 years of science (including 1 year of lab science), 2 years of a foreign language, 1 year of a fine arts class, 4 years of history and 4 credits of electives in order to get your diploma. You're also required to pass the AIMS tests.
By your logic, the entirety of high school can be considered slavery, and we should throw it all out because you HAVE to do it in order to get your diploma.
f**k, why not just get rid of school altogether? After all, all of those required homework assignments are just slavery!
I think that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. A diploma is a certificate to show that you've spent a certain amount of time studying and learning, and that you've done a certain amount of work. Every kind of certificate issued HAS REQUIREMENTS, that's what makes that certificate special. If we start saying "Well, we can't require this and that because that's slavery," we might as well just hand out diplomas to every idiot on the street corner and be along our merry ways.
You are not by any means required to get a diploma. Therefore, high school is NOT compulsory. Therefore, requiring community service in order to earn a diploma is NOT COMPULSORY SERVITUDE. My God, get it through your skull.
It's people like YOU that make the education system as screwed up as it is. We need tighter regulations and tougher requirements in order to earn a diploma. That way, America will (ideally) quit acting stupid and actually learn to care about the world around them.
As I said already, no one is REQUIRED to get a diploma. Granted, without a diploma you'll basically be homeless and jobless all your life, but you are certainly not by any means required to earn one. Therefore, you are not being forced to complete ANY kind of community service. Without the "compulsory" aspect, this is not slavery.
End of discussion.

My point is that you have to do something your being forced to do and its totally a waste of time. Its probably not as bad as the 3 months of military service Obama is going to enforce. How is experience of work and instillation of respect a waste of time? As far as I'm concerned, it's exactly what young people are in need of today. On a slight side note: recently, I was having an interesting conversation with my grandfather about National Service (the UK had a system which ran until 1950 or thereabouts). He had to do it when he hit 18, as did all of his peers. As there had been a recent news story about some 16 and 17 year olds in my area who had beaten an old lady nearly to death, we started talking about that. My grandfather then made a good point that the reason for cases such as the above are because children are being brought up with a lack of respect. While generally he knows that myself and my family (and many other teenagers) are still instilled with good respect levels at a young age; the majority are not. For this reason, my grandfather and I would agree that the re-installation of national service would be helpful, for the following reason: working for the army naturally instills a great level of respect. May I just add: National service (which I was talking about in the above paragraph) is not the same as this community service the thread is about, but it is a similar type of idea.

That's STILL not the point! You complain that for something you're not even doing you would have to do community work?
Also, what's happened to helping other people without expecting anything?
