A delightful conversation I had on Facebook via Status comments.
For context, a friend of mine posted on how she was smiling "from ear to ear". I immediately posted a picture of Elizabeth Short (aka the black dahlia), post chelsea grin, as a joke. This move devolved into her and another friend of hers commenting on how disgusting and disturbing that was and how I shouldn't have posted it. To further jest, I replied simply, "lightweights". It was at this point that the conversation devolved into something more ridiculous than I could have ever imagined...
Matt Chaney: Lightweights? There is a difference between thinking something is messed up and shouldn't be paraded around like a holiday float. And not being able to handle it.
Me: Well hopefully you at least understand the difference between being aware of things of that nature and marching them around on display. It's ignorance of reality that allowed that kind of "disturbing" activity to become more prevalent in society. Now, I'm not saying that I was attempting to make you all aware of anything, I was in fact merely making a jest about a chelsea grin, but don't be so stupid as to walk around with your eyes closed and your hands over your ears trying not to be informed about horrible things as if they don't happen.
Matt Chaney: Agreed, I do agree that we should know about the terrible violence that goes on in the world around us, but we shouldn't become so used to it that we are so numb that it doesn't even effect us.
Me: Well, that's a personal decision. There's no reason why I should allow someone else's tragedy affect me, so long as I have no connection to them.
Matt Chaney: Yes, but you should also be careful to not just blow it off as "oh it happens. sucks for them" which i'm not saying you do. But that's just my point
Me: I just opt to not care. Because caring won't help them. Caring won't help anyone.
Matt Chaney: Caring won't help anyone? So should a police officer intervene for you when your getting mugged or stabbed? Should an innocent bystander stand idly by as you scream for help about to fall from a ladder and break your neck? Saying caring won't help anyone is the reason why that crap goes on. "Oh well it's none of my business and I don't know that lady getting attacked by a man, so I'm just going to keep walking" that attitude is the reason why violence is up, abuse and violation.. Because no one cares, because no one wants to help
My facebook friend (who i'm actually not friends with): oh matt your so awesome lol xoxoxo
Me: Matt, I'm sorry, but that's f**king stupid. You completely lost track of what we were talking about. When I hear about a terrible incident that has ALREADY OCCURRED, of course I'm not going to care, it has ALREADY OCCURRED. What the f**k am I supposed to do about it? That has no legitimate tie to witnessing a mugging or beating. If I witness a mugging or beating, I am obviously going to do something about it, whether that something is intervene myself or call the police, or whatever is best for the situation. Don't be so idiotic as to think that I meant not caring about things I can change. My point was quite clear. I am not going to care about what has already occurred, because it ALREADY f**kING OCCURRED. It does no one any good to fire "concern rays" at the situation hoping it will suddenly reverse itself. Your point is completely devoid of rationale and totally beyond what I was actually talking about. You FAIL. And by the way, a police officer is going to intervene for me whether he cares or not, because he's getting paid to do so. So unless you want to pay me to spend all of my free time worrying about rape victims, go f**k yourself.
As ridiculous as this got, it made me wonder...
Why SHOULD we care about those kinds of things? Should we at all? Or is it just a waste of time? (A: yes)
