Is the Church (specifically American Christians) today overcompensating for its past sins? Most of the Christians that I have seen seem to be very decent and humble people; not racists, intolerant, Islamaphobic, or homophobic. I think most of these accusations are baloney, and an attempt to undermine Conservative America.
I don't know what the attitude toward the Church in European countries is like, but I would be interested in hearing about it. I would think it is similar to what's going on in America.
Bottom line is it seems to me that many Christians today are going to great lengths to apologize for things most of them are not responsible for (i.e. the Crusades, Islamaphobia, racism, and homophobia). I see this as a big problem. If Christians want to remain a good influence in the World, we need to grow a spine, and quit bleeding apologies. If we sin, we apologize, pay for our mistakes, and move on. It's not appropriate to dwell on our mistakes and ones other Christians made before us. The past is the past. It's done, and we've learned form our mistakes, changed, and we need to move on.

i don't understand what you mean by 'going to great lengths to apologize for things most of them are not responsible for', i don't see a whole lot of criticism of the crusades or of apologies for the crusades. as far as islamaphobia, i don't think anyone has tried to pin that on the Church; it seems to be more an american/western feeling in general (for instance, france banning muslim veils). honestly out of all that, the only thing i see people criticizing the church on is homophobia, partly because of southboro baptist church, but even with extremists such as them, homosexuality is wrong and no apology is requried for simply teaching against/condemning homosexual acts.
Also, european countries in general (at least western europe) are all making efforts to become pretty secular, so i don't know if religion is worn as outwardly over there as it is in america.
