I was thinking about gnosticism when I was reading Colossians in my Bible today. If you have heard of it and don't know what it is, I (and hopefully some others) will be glad to show you a little about it so you can defend your faith.

What's the verse you got it from? Everytime I read the subject line I think "agnosticism". I dunno why. If you give me the verse, I'll look it up and anything else I can find on it. Otherwise, ask Wisdom hahaha.

It is also the basis for 1 John as well I think... John was writing against the gnostic teachers.
I think the basis was that they taught that matter was entirely evil, and the spirit was entirely good. This led to false teaching about the person and work of Christ. Under this teaching, they believed that Christ must have been a visible spirit, and not actually man, or he would have been evil. And thus they do not believe that the crucifixion did anything for sins b/c he couldn't really be crucified. They believed that you had to pursue enlightenment through gaining knowledge basically. And thus they were at liberty to sin and do all sorts of stuff, b/c that stuff was evil anyway, but their spirits were already entirely good.

And then there's that whole asceticism thing. I'm not sure if I spelled it right. Asceticism is sever mistreatment to the body for religious purposes.

Gnostics will do this because they think it's right to hurt matter so they can be more spiritual. Now, my favorite part about gnosticism is that there are 3 gods. One of them is God and he is all spiritual, another is Demiurge and he is the god that created the world including us, and then there is the phemenon part of God...I forgot her name. She and Demiurge had Jesus as their son. And all these gods are one. Correct me if I'm wrong, I want to make sure I don't confuse anyone.

hmm i hadn't heard that. It may be true. I know that in actuality some of what scripture is combatting is Docetism, which is where gnostics derived their beliefs. That may be where those three gods came from. Yeah, ascetism was part of it though. But basically, they were justifying getting drunk as "mistreatment for spiritual gain"... how messed up. haha.

Gnosticism seems pretty twisted to me, but alot of people would happily believe it, because they don't want to be held responsible for sin.

i agree with the last entry!!!! a lot of people will chose to believe in something other than the gospel of our lord just so that they dont have to accept the responsibility of their actions and consequently their sins. it was a creative attempt by some person to come up with gnosticism but no matter how hard you try and cut it up jesus is lord, was born and lived to his death as a sinnless MAN and rose again and now sits with the father awaiting his children!!!!! praise God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gnosticism seems pretty twisted to me, but alot of people would happily believe it, because they don't want to be held responsible for sin. Isn't it human nature to NOT want to be? I've never met a person that wanted to be accepting of their consequences and actions. Keyword WANTS to be, some people have the strength to bite the bullet anddo it, accept their consequences, actions and faults... others know its their fault but won't accept it. This is why it's important to ask for forgiveness, admit you are not perfect and ask God to forgive you. However, people get lost in religion because they feel it makes them belong with other people like them, and when it's an easy way out like not being responsible for your imperfections, it feels a lot easier, therefore it's difficult for them NOT to believe it once they are in it. This is unfortunate.
