Remember that verse in the Bible? "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Phillipians 4:8 (KJV)...use that verse to "filter" through the music. That's what I do usually.

hey me again...i was just thinking some more about bands like Zao and stuff...and i started to laugh because...i think i've been a lil bit too strict on my music...not that i'm going to switch to the REAL secular bands...but at least listen to the christian artists in the bands like Anberlin, Zao, Still Remains...i mean...even Zao has decent lyrics...there isnt anything suicidal or anything...Dan is just a poet...like Ryan from Demon Hunter...i'm still kinda laughing cause i was afraid to listen to these bands with christian beleifs cause they arnt exactly labeled as chrisian bands...but its almost the same thing...they just dont want to be judged and hated even by the christian kids cause they didnt preach on stage or w/e....but the truth is..when i was listening to The Funeral of God one night...i actually thought about what if God was gone...*and this was when i was running from God*...i got so scared thinking about it and i started praying that night....do you guys think its okay to listen to bands with strong christian influences like Zao,Anberlin,Still Remains,Dead Poetic...and one more thing is..i think now that maybe God doesnt want all bands to be labeled as christian bands...God works in so many ways and if he sends bands that are not labeled as christian bands but have all christians in them with somewhat of a message...they will be able to play clubs and stuff and still have high standards of themeselves and bring the message in only...kinda sneakng it in...and when a fan that isnt a believer might get to meet the band..wow those dudes are all christians...and then that person looks up their lyrics and the message starts coming through to them...

man, i look at it this way, christian bands are definately the best to listen to, and its so great cuz nowadays, you have all the same stuff as in seculkar bands, but... not as satanic and crap, lol, i mean, you can find some of the heaviest stuff out there, and its christian... BTA for example... if i didnt know they were christian, i would never think it... bit, i think its really all about the lyrics, check em out, you can usually tell if it is a band you should be listening to or not by the lyrics...
ok, i know it might be kinda confusing, but idk, thats kinda what i feel. if you are wondering which bands you should/shouldnt listen to, man, just pray about it, thats the best thing to do.

Im' totally new to this forum in fact this is my first post but from reading this... Undeceived, despite your beliefs, don't give up about bands that aren't labeled as christian. Keep in mind some of these bands that ARE christian don't label themselves obviously, they do that for a reason. Zao started off very obvious and seemed to label themselves less and less and let the listeners read for themselves, and their lyrics are very strong. As for "the kind of music" I think that people are too stereotypical about the "scene" thinking that this kind of music just because of the hereditary sound it has is automatically "evil". These bands have a very strong message, not to be missed. I went through very difficult times in my life, only thing keeping me going was the good book, and my music. Read the lyrics, listen to the music, as ezekiel says, God gave you that sense of right and wrong and you can tell if it's good or bad.
Everyone here knows well what they speak of, like everyone has said, listen to yourself and read the lyrics, pray about it.
I myself grew up on Project 86 and Zao in my still longing taste for metal with a meaning. Most of the newer stuff I ready and listen to I myself like to call "Apocalytic metal" simply because it seems to speak more and more of what lies ahead in the future and makes you think. Funeral of God is a very good album. My own recommendation for a good album is Project 86, drawing black lines and my personal favorite - Zao: Liberate te ex inferis (though it will seem creepy to listen to at first, if you like this music, it has a powerful message, as does blood and fire album) If you want a more meaningful album, Where blood and fire bring rest and peace by Zao is a good place to start with lyrics that talk about anything from losing a close friend, to praising god including prayer and on top of that talking about difficult times. I've found myself on that album several times listening to it in hard times, brings me back to reality.
And above all, it would seem if you need people to talk to on advice, this forum seems very wise.

I used to listen to only 'Christian' music. For years i was that way. But i grew tired of hearing about all the bad things going on in 'Christian' music. Or finding out that a band denies Christianity all together. There are a few bands left out there that the term 'Christian' metal fit's... but not as many as get's labeled. Anymore, when i buy a 'Christian' CD i wonder if i am actually getting what i payed for. People like to say 'look at the lyrics, of course they're Christian', or 'i met those guys, they're really nice' as if to imply that either of those things means anything. I've known 'Christian' musician's who have really put up the good Christian front, but also saw them behind the scene's where the Christianity was quite so important. I've also heard the countless stories of people falling away, or claiming Christianity but not living it. When i listen to secular music, i know, at least, they mean what they say... though granted there are 'just for the image' types, but does it matter at that point? They aren't Christian, so it doesn't matter if they do/say things for image or if they mean it... either way you know the message isn't Christian, & you know it. I've also discovered music has been taken to another level in my mind, since starting to listen to secular music. While there is a small list of high quality Christian bands... & a huge list of average Christian bands, there is so much i've found to enjoy out there that the Christian scene doesn't touch. The secualr scene seems to have more originality & better all-around musicianship. But, i will state, since i'm on the BTA board, that they are one of the better 'Christian' bands out there. My friend from work & i had been talking about the BTA album before it came out. We were both curious... well, i bought it & told him how good it was... but when i let him listen to it he said 'why didn't you tell me this was one of the best albums ever' He's just waiting to get the $ to buy it, now. So i will speak up as well & give props to BTA for being both metal & Christian... a rarity these days.

The best lyrics in Death/Doom/Black metal, that I know of, are: Schaliach, Extol, Lengsel(a little depressing, though), The Showdown(great 2nd coming theme), Antestor, Paramecium, Living Sacrifice, and many more.
