I've spent the most time with the NIV translation over the years, but as I'm reading the bible more frequently these days I'm considering which translation I'd like to spend the most time with. I don't have a lot of experience with "formal equivalence" translations, and I've read a bit from a few dynamic equivalence versions but they're detestable. I don't like TNIV it's too feminist. The NIV is decent, but I'm thinking I'd like more accuracy. At the moment I'm considering between the English Standard Version (ESV) or New King James Version (NKJV), but I'm leaning towards the NKJV as it is apparently more accurate [ >]. However, there is always the option of reading through entire translations and cycling through them once I finish one version -- in order to make up my own mind on the matter. But, of course this would take a long time to do. So, what translation do you prefer, or think is the best?

I don't have much experience with the NKJV and ESV, since I usually read bible in Dutch. I own an NIV bible though and I can affirm your idea that it not the most accurate translation. I happen to have learned (Koine) Greek at my school, because I go to a fancy school where they teach (classical) Latin and (Koine) Greek, so I can translate the New Testament from the original Greek. My experience is that the NIV doesn't do anything all too weird, but it isn't very literal. Mostly, they do put their own interpretation in it a bit, but their interpretation usually isn't that bad. It's good for just reading it but I would advise at least checking up with other translations when doing a more in depth bible study. Actually, you should always check up with other bible translation when doing in depth bible study, no matter what translation you got. But apart from affirming that NIV isn't that great, I can't say much more. ESV and NKJV are both good translation from what I've heard. You should probably just check them out and see what you like better.

I prefer to use a bunch of different translations, so I can see how they all line up together.

I guess viewing what different translations say is always a good idea, but I'm not really studying like that at the moment. I'm reading 10 chapters a day, and it'd take too long to read them again or to check things all the time with other translations. I've decided I'll use NKJV, seems like the best option at the moment.

Most people I know who study the Bible more deeply than I do (and have a disposable income and study theology) tend to use the NRSV for most of their study. I find that the NKJV is good but hard to get through- which might be good for slowing reading and working out what a passage really means.

NKJV and ESV are my personal favourites, and NRSV is used in a lot of scholarly circles for very technical bible study.

NRSV doesn't sound good to me, another feminist bible.

What's wrong with feminism?

I like manliness, our culture is doing everything it can to destroy it.

I like manliness, our culture is doing everything it can to destroy it. I wouldn't agree. I know I'm a girl so I'd naturally be pro-female, but most feminists are simply looking for equal opportunities. Many feminists also recognise that men and women may have very separate natural roles in society.

NASB: most reliable translation in existence. Seriously. Whenever people pro/con it, the only thing they ever put in the con section is "language is above the average reader's comprehension."
As for feminism, modern feminism is more about male subjugation than female equality. They've proven that by skewing statistics to misrepresent labor "inequalities" and further demeaning women by result of the women's lib movement.
To get some stuff out of the way, I do not believe a woman can necessarily do every job a man can. If I'm unconscious in a fire, I don't want 5'6" Susy Smith trying to haul my body out. Same goes for being wounded on a battlefield.
This should really be in its own thread.
