Help me, I want to listen to this band. I'm thinking I should start with one of their newer albums and ignore their older albums because they'll have obviously improved a lot over the years.

It doesnt really matter to much from which era of BG you listen to.
Most of it is just awesome.

A friend of mine back in high school got into this band. He started with "Nightfall in MiddleEarth" or whatever it's called. Seemed like (at least at the time) that was a good album to begin with.

I agree. Blind Guardian is a very solid band. I've got most of their albums, and they all sound great to me. ;D

You were almost correct, the album is called Nightfall in Middle-Earth. The only thing that was wrong with your spelling was the lack of a hyphen.

Nightfall in Middle-Earth was decent, but tommorow I'll listen to it extremely loud on better speakers -- maybe that will help my appreciation. Is this their best album?

It all comes down to personal preference my friend. I personally think Imaginations From the Otherside is their best album, but others I know think A Night At the Opera is their best. I guess it depends on your taste in metal. If you prefer the more progressive and melodic sound then go with their later albums if you prefer faster heavier metal go with their earlier stuff. This is why I enjoy IFtOS so much it's a good balance of both their eras. It's fast and heavy most of the time but here is where they upped their melodic/prog side that would later be come more prevalent.

HANSI. 'Nuff said.
But I'm actually one of those "weird ones" who appreciates Demons & Wizards more.

I used to be into Demons & Wizards. Never heard the second album but the first was quite good. I ended up getting rid of it though because of the lyrics' anti-Christian themes. :/

Demon and Wizards are great.
The lyrics arent super anti-christian. But supposedly Hansi is a christian, from the last time I heard.

Eh, songs like "My Last Sunrise" seem pretty clear to me (below). That's interesting that Hansi considers himself Christian. I don't think Jon is too fond of Christianity though, as I recall.
The grail's in pieces All the bliss is gone The rose has dried out And the lamb got slaughtered long ago The hope became another lie Like the nonexisting father god I'll close my eyes, goodbye
Don't wait for me on the other side Everything is burning Rotten flesh keeps burning It's MY LAST SUNRISE in fear Don't wait for me on the other side
Golgotha - had seen nothing else but A carpenter's death Golgotha - not more maybe not even that

Jon wrote the lyrics. Hansi just went with it.

^I figured as much. Too bad, because the music is real good (especially "Fiddler..."). I just can't enjoy music as much when I know it's directly opposing something I stand for, ya know? Anyways, sorry for hijacking this thread and turning it into yet another discussion of lyrical content. Back to Blind Guardian!
