Shredding bores me. And sometimes it annoys the hell out of me.
I want to hear all the instruments and the vocalist work together to create a melodic masterpeice. No solos are needed for amazing songs. Granted, some solos are pretty awesome (that one solo that Mikael Akerfeldt plays in "White Cluster", and pretty much any solo performed by Fredrik Thordendal), but IMO they detract from the song if they're used too often. I'd rather hear a three-part harmony between two guitarists and a bassist any day.

so how long has Jon Star been on board anyway? I'm just wondering if all that stuff you said about the song writing process long ago still applies or if you have completely started a new slate and started over the writing process.

EDIT: With this post, Untouchable and I have the same amount of posts....

Writing a good album is as much about the band being excited and all moving on the same wavelength as it is about the talent of the people involved. At this point BTA is more energized about writing music than we have ever been. That is why this album will be the best one we have ever done. ;D

We have been working with Jon since December 07. Initially we were playing with the idea of just having him as a guest guitarist or brining him on as the third guitarist. However, time has its way and Alex decided that he would rather just pass the torch back to Jon and be able to focus on Aletheian 100%. At this point we have 11 songs written and only 1 of them was written with Alex. He was cool enough to say that we can go ahead and record that song on the new record. Word up.

Hey everyone, Just thought that I would pop in and toss you a little info from my side of things... I'll be posting more in a MySpace blog later, but basically things went down just like Jason said: we started working with Jon again last year but didn't know what form things were going to take. I had fun working through songs with Jon and we actually talked quite a bit on the phone and in person, but it became more and more apparent that as cool as it would be to have both me and Jon on the new CD, I really had this nagging feeling that Jon and the guys were perfectly capable of writing a killer CD without me, and since I am a tech-metal guy at heart and kindof a control freak when it comes to songs, the time was right for me to bow out and give Jon back the band that he worked so hard to get off the ground. and let me tell you: it has been REALLY hard to keep all that a secret for over half a year!! My original intent with BTA was to come in when they were in PILES AND PILES of debt + lacking a lead guitarist and just help them tour to pay that down, and then to put together a CD, tour to support it and then go back to Aletheian... actually, that is almost exactly how my contract was worded. But things started to pick up and BTA went from drawing under a hundred or so fans a night to a band that was selling out small clubs, so I stuck around to see things through because it felt like God was really kicking open doors. But when Duck left and Jon looked like he would be able to get back with the band, things just seemed right for me to get back to Aletheian full time. I stuck around a bit longer than anyone really expected, but I was more than happy to help the band get to where it is now and then pass the project back to Jon. As far as my involvement in the new CD, I put together a few song ideas as well as a complete song for the CD and helped a bit with parts and arrangements for a few others, so I gave it to them to use if they want it... I am not even taking any royalties or anything, I just hope they put out a killer CD. Maybe if you are lucky I'll post some of the demo tracks I wrote that will never get used Also, on this CD everyone in the band contributed a few song ideas, and they all have a different feel than the others, so it should be fun for longtime BTA fans to see how each individual member approaches the writing of a full song. BUUUUUUUUT... another thing that I don't think has been talked about enough is the impact that Lopez will have on the CD. He is a killer drummer and also songwriter and guitarist... I'm not kidding either, he can shred it up and has a really tight sense of rhythm. He comes from a straight-up death metal drumming background and is stupidly fast and tight. I really think that his style will lend a much heavier feel to the songs. I think that will have just as much an impact on the feel of the songs as any other member change and I think you will all be very happy with it. So anyway, I'll still poke my head in on the boards every once in a while to answer questions and just hang out. Peace
