I need a smart and/or feel-good anime movie/series. I want to watch more stuff like FLCL and My Neighbor Totoro. Not-stuff like Bleach and DBZ where it's just powering up and getting infinitely stronger to beat the next boss. Suggestions? I'm guessing I'll have to watch more Miyazaki films. My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke are the only ones I've seen.

Any of the ones I mentioned Phillip, but if I had to suggest one to anyone on these boards I'd say Beck Mongolian Chop Squad, it's about some teenagers who start a band,it's surprisingly good.I just finished watching it today.
Edit: I have the DVDs of it but I think it comes on Funimation

Just like every other medium, mainstream anime sucks. Besides, all the shows that have hit it big in america, like Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and Naruto were actually intended for pre-pubescent kids.
Phillip, or anyone else who doesn't really have any inclinations towards anime culture/style, try out Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, or Kino's Journey. They're all kind of a blend of psychological and philosophical story telling. Honestly, Miyazaki is pretty unique in his form in that he can make a comforting film without making it ridiculously childish or shallow. A few series (which are also some of my favorites) that kind of reminded me of his work are Casshern Sins and Kaiba. They tell really profound stories, but retain an innocence and have similar emotional content.

There is no way Fullmetal Alchemist was intended for pre-prubescent kids, that stuff is seriously too twisted for that. Especially the new Brotherhood series, which is supposed to be closer to the original manga. I still can't decide which one I like better, but regardless they are both excellent. Miyazaki is brilliant, love his stuff. Gurenn Lagann is a pretty good anime I'm about halfway through right now- for stuff with less giant robots and fighting Toradora, and Spice Wolf are also good. Wolf's Rain is one of my favorites too, great ending which is unusual with anime lol. I've only the seen the first season of Code Geass, it started really good, but the end started getting blah. I might see the second if I can find it somewhere- maybe it will be better. Also despite massive amounts of teh gay, Ouran Host club is kind of hilarious.

If you read the actual manga of FMA, the anime kind of sucks. I mean, last time I checked, we still get a new chapter of FMA every month..... Especially the first anime sucked, I don't know about the new series you speak off, but the old series were based off what they had back then, which isn't even half of the storyline that we have now, besides, it's still going on as I said.
This is true for all anime series based on manga's.. Like movies based on books are always worse than the original books.
FMA is by the way Shonen which is like for teens. But hey, I'm 17, I was 16 when I read it, so I fall in the demographics.
The biggest fail in the history of anime is the last arc of Rurouni Kenshin. (I think it was called Samurai X in the West). It made me stop ever wanting to watch anime that is based on a manga.
Seriously people, read the manga, it's better. always. TTBOMK without exception.

Oh man maarten, I totally agree about Ruroni Kenshin, that series pretty much started falling to pieces after the shishio arc. The new FMA series is supposed to follow the manga exactly- I haven't read the manga so I wouldn't know, but so far its alot different then the last anime. Its called Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood here in the states, you can watch subed episodes on funimation's youtube channel. I like anime better than manga just because I've never liked comic books in general. Plus I like color more then black and white.

Totally forgot to mention Neon Genesis Evangelion, another one of my favorites. But I agree with The Worm on this one, all the shows like that just annoy me and don't have a good story line. What I mean by that is they just keep adding to the story so they can have a TV show as if it's a sitcom or something, not an anime.
