i live in an area with a burgeoning hardcore/metalcore scene, with several area bands that claim to be "Christian."
(first a story... as an example) one of the local bands came home from cornerstone last year (where they played.. daily i think.. on one of the generator stages) and were bragging about getting drunk with zao....
(now back to my rant)
quite a few of them are partiers and smoke a lot or do drugs or sleep around, and i was wondering if my own (conservative) upbringing made this seem like a big deal to me or if other people saw this type of thing as a moral contradiction.
and while i believe all that... i still don't feel like i can say anything either, because everybody makes mistakes, and who am i to tell somebody that they're doing something wrong when i'm sure i've got quite the plank in my own eye.

first of all. thanks for joining the boards.
listen man. i know how you feel. all of us in the band have watched in disappointment as the Christian "scene" has lost almost all of its integrity. it seems we have reached the point where there are very few if any differences between secular and "Christian" bands. all too often these days it seems like the role of God in the band takes a back seat to the band's fashion sense and/or how many kids get in the dance pit.
i absolutely will not say that we are any better than these groups, as we certainly have more than our share of shortcomings. however, if you guys will pray for us and when you come out to the shows stay and talk with us and encourage us; together through Christ we can bring this "scene" back to what it used to be. when bands werent afaid to be called "Spirit Filled". when bands realized they were an influence on the kids at shows and that they might even be someone's role model.

Well, I will say this about you guys, and you guys are the real deal. I will say the same for the guys in Betrayed with a Kiss. Deano spoke about 5 minutes or so last night about Jesus and it was absolutely awesome.
Then later that night, the drummer came out and did added vocals and Josh took over on drums. The drummer dropkicked the bass player. It was hilarious!

[spunj13] I feel very much the same way, but I'd say go ahead and say something about it if you have the chance. I try to ask the guys if they are Christians and if yes, the Bible is clear on physical sins like getting drunk and sleeping around. It is the loving thing to do to tell them that what they are doing is sin and encourage them to repent. If they don't claim to be Christians, then there's nothing to say. Thank you for your concern, because it is a big deal when God's children live lifestyles that spite God's law.

I'd say if they are claiming Christianity and boasting about that stuff... yeah, challenge them in their beliefs about scripture. Sometimes its as simple as asking "do you think thats what Christ wants you to do?" If he's Lord of your life, you're gonna want to grow OUT of that stuff, not boast about it. Have them read 1 John, it pretty much lays out the difference between a believer and a non-believer.
In response to the BTA guys... its funny, I used to think I was silly for doing this, but i really DO pray for bands I like that are on the road. I know its got to be SO hard on your walk... being away from church, little encouragement to be alone with God, sheesh. But at the same time, I always figured if I walked up to a guy in a band and was like "hey, so how are you walking with the Lord?" then they'd be like who are you? (although, if they were my brother in Christ, it should be appreciated, right).
It is so sad how the Christian scene has gotten... i remember how the ol "SFXHC" days were... I pray that the bands on solidstate who love the Lord would let it show in their performances. I think sometimes bands are afraid to, like they won't sell albums, or people will be turned off to them. But look at bands like Living Sacrifice... they were legends, had a HUGE respect from all metal people (heck, they even got a tribute album) and they were OBVIOUSLY all about Christ. People will like the music if its good. Its just a matter of, will a band step up and represent the One they represent.

Well, I will say this about you guys, and you guys are the real deal. I agree. But yes, I have noticed another band *who shall remain nameless* at a show one time doing things that I would probably never do and still claim to be a Christian. I also had a very conservative upbringing and seeing that type of thing does upset me. So I know how you feel.

i'm tired of watered down Christianity...the thing i hate most to see is "Christians" living like the world to fit in and get by in life...better to deny Christianity than to claim it and live a sinful lifestyle...i'm ready to see some bands stand up proud and tall for what they believe, even if they can't sell crap...if they do what God calls them to do then He will provide...i won't tolerate some of the crap that goes on, i will not compromise...God's way or no way

mmm...hey, i'm new to the boards and im new to the band.....i listened to one of your songs and i really liked it and i like your testimony/bio on the site...but anyways, back to the topic....i agree with spunj13...if you're a Christian, you gotta make Jesus reflect in you life and it made me really happy that some of the guys from BTA even replied....it was uplifting....i also been to shows where i been dissapointing about "CHristian"bands....one of my fav bands is underoath and i love their older stuff and i miss dallas even though i only started listen to them when he had already left....i feel like their lyrics are more abstract and not really Christ centered as they used to be and even though they claim to be still Christian, it's kind of hard for ppl who dont know they are Christian to get the message...if you read their bio, there is nothing about God...it's all about music....i saw them live and they are awesome and hung out with them after the show...they are awesome ppl and i could see that they want to serve God but like Wisdom said...this bands need to get back to what it is all about , Jesus and not just music....other dissapointing things i seen/heard ....not to judge anyone cause im nobody to judge but so that you guys can pray so that things change....norma jean were on MTV2's headbanger's ball and the host asked the lead singer about the new album...his answer was that it would be "heavy as balls", ok...some might think that is not that big of a deal but like Justincredible said..."do you think thats what Christ wants you to do?" or say...i dont believe that what the lead singer from norma jean said is edifying in anyway and it made them seem just like any other secular band....i went to see mewithoutYOU and blindside a few months ago and there was a band called THE KICK....i'm not sure if they were Christians but at the end the singer said something about NY kicking our A$$ and then he said God bless you all....at another mewithoutYOU show there was this acoustic solo artist....he kept of using the F word and then he sang a song about Jesus....sry if i sound like im just complaining and judging but i feel like i had to let this out.....it hurts me as a Christian that my brothers in Christ are not following the teachings of Jesus and i'm afraid that they're making Jesus into just a fasion...and i as well pray for bands i listen to....and i will be really praying for you guys in BTA....i know that been a Christian is tough but we gotta keep on trusting Him...God bless you all and sry if i offended anyone...i didnt want to seem as if i was judging the bands or anyone else....but like i said, i had to let it out.

hey man. first of all welcome to the boards. thank you so much for what you've said and your support and commitment to pray for us. i can say that everyone in our band has expressed these same concerns for as long as we have been together. it is definately on our hearts to make a deliberate effort in everything that we do as a group to stand up for Jesus Christ. however, i would be willing to wager that many bands have started out with this same burden and over the years of being in the limelight it has just slowly faded away or gotten wattered down. thats why your prayers are so important. its also important that you come up to us at shows and encourage us and even rebuke us if you see us doing something that doesnt glorify God. we have been together for going on 6 years this summer and our purpose has always been the same...to reach people for Christ and glorify God. but i dont want to be so ignorant as to think that we have it all figured out. so thanks again and i really hope you guys mean it when you say you will commit to pray for us.

Heyyyy i was wondering what Dallas' new band was. I do appreciate what underoath13 said too. I think whats hard is that we all still sin. We have to be careful to look at our own planks and not get caught in our self righteousness. Ahh the truth of the gospel of grace. It is all by Gods grace that we are saved, but saving faith never comes without a changed life.
