umm zao are christian and they always were actually im against all that "christian music market" in my opinion there should be one market music isnt just about the lyrics music is music it doesen't matter what you belive in... if someone agrees with your lyrics and beliefs, cool! if not, well, god bless him i think that should be the opinion of any christian band u can talk about your beliefs in the lyrics and talk about christ , but why make a christian market music is music no matter what your message is in your lyrics that's my opinion and dont get me wrong im christian i totally agree with you.

I believe that Zao has become less and less "designated" in the sense of being posted and labeled as a "just christian" band since Dan has come into the group, since he joined the lyrics changed and not in a bad way at all. But I think the one thing that has pulled Zao away from the "norm" and put them where they are now is the fact that they let the music speak for itself. Instead of going with the flow of normal lyrics writing music like they have been, such as funeral of God all based not on what is, but what could be giving you a sense of reflection and a sense of realization of what is now instead of what could be based off of the album really makes you think. Since I've listened to the first cd (and I own all of them) I've noticed a real transition from more of a "praise" music and more into something that has a poetic intricacy in the sense that all of the lyrics are not always blatantly obvious and you have to muse on the music. That is afterall the definition of "muse" is to think, such is music. Keep in mind that Zao may be christians, but they are christians who have all been through a LOT, especially Dan (if you've read the stories... you know) and AMEN that they have the experience to speak of! I never wish horrible things upon them, but the things they HAVE been through have entered into their music for a very powerful message. Without true experience of what you are talking about, words have no meaning because they have no emotion, only a perception of an opinion, not experience. That's why almost all of the music you hear come from Zao always has a story behind it. It isn't something that they usually just pull out of nowhere. I do not think that they are "borderline" at all, they don't cuss, they don't blasphemize anything, however they do twist words and bend them till they are on the border of questioning but in a sense to make you think of why and get down to the meaning of it all.
Another reason I like them.
Hope I didn't confuse anyone (I tend to type quite a bit).

music isnt all about the lyrics, but they are clearly a part of it, just as much as any guitar solo or blast beat. That said, Zao's lyrics are amazing, and thats all we need to know, its not on us to judge the holiness of the band members.
